SUBMITTING YOUR DETAILS TO SEARCH ENGINES AND DIRECTORIES
By Jim Rhodes http://deadlock.com/promote/

These few hours are the make-or-break time for your page, so don't cut corners

Attention! If you have a large site with more than, say, 200 pages, be aware that some deep engines (notably Alta Vista) only accept a limited number of submissions for any one domain. I recently chatted with a poor lady who had bombarded Alta Vista, over a number of months, with a lot of submissions. She was distraught because she could no longer submit her pages. Alta Vista was saying "No More". There's no way to delete listings from Alta Vista, so she's gonna have to wait forever until they naturally expire. You have been warned.

METHOD A: AUTOMATICALLY
Spend a paltry $70 and arm yourself with The Promotion Artist software which handles a lot of the time-consuming work automatically, offline.

It'll also ensure that you don't forget or miss any tricks when it comes to creating your killer listings because everything's built in, so you can concentrate on the important things like your keyword lists. Try the free demo first.

METHOD B: MANUALLY... Use the list at the end of this page to load the submission forms for the search engines one by one. For those of you who pay for timed calls to your ISP (like us in the UK), each time you load a page and have it on the screen in front of you, log off so that you're not worrying about your telephone bill. This way, you'll take time over it and do the job properly.

DEEP ENGINES
Warning!
Before you submit your URL to the deep engines, make sure your TITLE and META tags are all in order. Ideally, your page should be letter perfect before you even consider uploading it in the first place because once the robot has visited, that's how your page will appear in the database until it visits again, which can be a good three months later. You have been warned.

Tip!
Another naughty one... When you submit to certain deeps (not all of them), ignore what it says and submit all your sub-pages at the same time as your home page! Yes, they would all get indexed eventually, but much later. If you submit a whole bunch and they all have the same META keywords tag, chances are you'll get a nice long list of pages on your site in certain results. I'm sure you've seen examples of this, especially on Alta Vista. Speaking of Alta Vista, it'll only let you submit ten pages on the same site (it'll crawl the rest) so submit your ten most important ones.

STANDARD ENGINES
Most of the details will be straightforward, like your email address and URL. The ones to take care over are the 'Title' and 'Comments' sections as discussed previously. In the 'Comments' box, put your short description first, followed by your list of keywords if you're allowed to (not Yahoo!).

DEVISE A CAPTION AND DESCRIPTION
What's a caption and description?
Caption: in a standard engine results list, this is the bit you click on. You need to have keywords in it, and it has to be appealing to a human. If you have pictures or photographs on your page, say so. The words 'lots of photos' will immediately give you an edge over most of the other pages on the list. The word 'FREE' always catches the eye too.

Description: the bit you read, after the caption. Again, it needs keywords and needs to be appealing.

A Yahoo! listing looks like this (caption and description):
Art Of Business Web Site Promotion - free tips and secrets for registering your site at the top of the search engines, including a general marketing guide.

When you register on Yahoo!, restrict your description to about ten words if you can manage it (Yahoo! advises 20 words, but don't believe it!), otherwise it'll be tampered with and possibly cut down. Yeah, mine's got 20, but I went for broke and got lucky, which is rare.

Work as many as possible of your most powerful words into the caption and description, but make sure it makes sense - a list of keywords will be ignominiously rejected!. Caption is more powerful than description but all the same, try to keep the caption short otherwise it'll get chopped, or they'll move part of it to the description which isn't so bad.

Keywords in the caption are more important that those in the description, but remember, the caption has to match the title of your page. Consider temporarily changing the title of your page to match a strong Yahoo caption. Once you're listed, you can change it back again. Oooohh, how low-down and dirty can I get?!

Note: Don't waste words on the standard engines by repeating them more than once. It won't gain you any advantage at all.

CATEGORIES
In general, categories which are a) low down the hierarchy (ie. /hotels/vicarage rather than regional/lodgings/london/hotels/vicarage) and b) low alphabetically will come up first, but this doesn't work so well in practice. When it comes to Yahoo!, asking for a category is exactly that — asking. Your site is likely to appear in a totally different place than you originally put on the submission form.

It's best to find relevant categories and then eliminate the ones on your list which have long addresses and/or have a high first letter. Business_and_Economy is a good place to start looking, rather than Regional... Always fill in the 'Additional Categories' section.

RE-SUBMITTING YOUR DETAILS!
I once registered a page with a short description and when it appeared the description bore no resemblance to the text I'd put in the registration form - the admin chap (or chapess) had decided to invent a new description which was factually wrong! So don't forget to go back and check your listing when it appears.

If you don't like the look of your listing or you want to add an extra category on any of the standard engines, you can always go back and visit the "Change URL" page. Be warned that this can be very frustrating though, you'll need the patience of a saint. You'll be given low priority and it may take you several attempts over a number of weeks before you get any joy. At least, during this time, you'll have some kind of listing even if it's not perfect.

And while you're re-submitting...
