Which Internet Business Is Right For You?
By Marty Foley   ©2004 All Rights Reserved

Some ProfitInfo readers are in the preliminary stages of building online businesses. This article is especially for such readers.

In your search for an online business to start, I first suggest that you first ask yourself some important questions, such as:

  • What hobbies, special skills, experience or education do you have?
  • What hobbies or other pursuits are you passionate about?

There are good reasons to ask yourself these things.

For example, if you've been passionate about something for some time, likely you have become quite skilled at it. You may even qualify as an expert on the subject, even though you may modestly not consider yourself one.

Expertise that you have developed can help you establish credibility in your field, which is very important. Your expertise may already equip you to develop an info-product on the topic, which can be a good online product, as well as a marketing vehicle in itself.

Another reason to consider a field that you already have an interest in is that it's much better - in my opinion - to enjoy the line of work you're in. Who says work has to be drudgery?

You might not realize it, but you could probably write a book on your favorite topic by now. Sure, there may be competition, but it's a matter of doing a better job or putting on a better twist than the next guy, or out-marketing them.

Although it helps, it's not necessary to be an expert in the field. What you already know can be expanded with further research. By researching, studying and learning the field well, you'll eventually become an expert on it. That's where "passion" or strong interest in the field comes in.

If you're interested in the field, you'll find it easier and perhaps even fun to learn. This will help you persist at researching and developing your own products, locating products created by others, and marketing the entire line. Moreover, since you're interested in the field, even if you never sell a single product (not likely to happen when you follow these guidelines), you can probably still use and benefit from the knowledge you've gained.

If you have a strong interest in a topic, most likely there are lots of other people that are also interested in the same thing.

Once you've decided on a few potential areas that you're interested in, get online and do some research to see if you can find some online groups or communities that are centered around that theme or subject area. (You probably already know of some. Look at your favorite bookmarks.) By being in close contact with them you can develop keen insight on their wants and needs.

What you want to confirm is whether you can find enough other people that are interested in the same subject area, and that you can reach them with your marketing.

Once you've done that, and finally have decided which theme or subject area to focus your business on, the next step is to find or develop products and/or services that the people in the market would be willing to pay for.

Knowing the field well will give you a good feel for the problems and challenges that these people want to solve. Products and services that offer solutions to these are often winning ones. (Also consider what others are selling profitably in the field. Many times a new twist can be added to what's already working in order to gain a competitive edge.)

Then develop your marketing arsenal and promote your business like crazy
