The Power of Writing Articles for Distribution
By Douglas B. Keller   ©2004 All Rights Reserved

With an ever increasing influx of Internet users with a desire to create a successful online business, the importance of gaining exposure and trust among fellow surfers and entrepreneurs takes on paramount proportions. With this in mind, what would you consider the NUMBER ONE tactic you can use TODAY to build your online credibility and trust? Without a doubt, it's writing articles for online publication!

I can't stress the importance of submitting your original articles to ezines, news groups, and online articles libraries. Using this medium, you can propel your business to new levels while -- at the same time -- creating an online aura of knowledge and respectability.

This is so important that I want to say it again. the most crucial aspect of success in ANY Internet business is to acquire the trust of those with whom you desire to do business.

Gaining the trust of Netizens is not an easy task. You are, for the most part, dealing with strangers, and until these strangers know and trust you -- even a little -- they will not purchase your products or services.

Writing articles is not near as difficult as it may seem when you first approach the idea. Maybe you've asked yourself, "What would I write an article about?" The answer is simple! You write about something with which you are familiar! Write what you know.

You may then ask, "What do I know? What am I familiar with?" If you're creating an online business or already own one, then you write about any and everything pertaining to that business.

Online marketers are always looking for information. With a little effort ANYONE can provide good, intelligent, and honest information for interested readers.

Another very important consideration when writing about a product or service, is that you yourself have used or at the very least have great confidence that it will be of value to others. If you are trying to promote a product or service that you wouldn't or don't use yourself, you will never convince a stranger that they should use it. At least not enough strangers to warrant investing your time and effort into the writing. Whether it is a product or a service that you are promoting -- and thus, writing about -- you MUST believe in it wholeheartedly yourself.

Something else you need to keep in mind is that an article should be just that. NOT a sales letter. Write in a newsworthy, informational tone and not with buy-it-now hype. The idea is to encourage other publishers to reprint your article. They won't if it's simply a sales letter for your pet products or services.

I do a lot of reading, as I have all my life, and I have always noticed that when people write honestly and sincerely about something they FEEL, rather than simply something they THINK, those feelings will usually be evident in their language. Readers will experience some of the writer's feelings, as well, thus creating a type of bond between writer and reader. This should be the goal of all your writing.

Let me explain. Say you are writing an email to a friend across town one summer morning asking, or maybe just stating, that you would like to go to the lake tomorrow.

Here is one possible script:

  Cindy,

I was sitting here thinking that we could go to the lake
tomorrow and do a little swimming and sunbathing. There's
a new spot I visited last week and we could go there. When
I was there last week, there were not too many people,
plus there are several other things we could do in a
nearby park. Let me know what you think.

  Susan

Here is another possible script:

Hi, Cindy! I had this wonderful idea, while I was having breakfast this morning. I couldn't wait to share it with you... I'm so excited! I went to the lake last Friday and found this wonderful spot we could swim and sunbathe. You will just fall in love with it! It is so GREAT because it is not very crowded, and I even saw some cute guys there. I really hope you can go. There is also a beautiful park nearby that has hiking trails, swings, and a lot of other neat things. It would be so much fun to go and spend the whole day and just relax and have enjoy ourselves. Email me back as soon as you can. I can't wait to make plans! Talk to you soon. Love, Susan

Which one would make YOU want to go to the lake?

WHY?

Let's look at the differences in the two emails. The first email doesn't contain any FEELING. It sounds like Susan would be just as well to go back to bed for all the excitement that comes across about going to the lake. Maybe she's depressed or needs some Geritol™. Maybe she needs both. At any rate, there isn't much appeal to her message. It seems bland and DEAD!

On the other hand, the second message is vibrant and ALIVE! It sounds EXCITING! It builds INTEREST! It makes you want to act, to jump right off that couch and head to the lake! THAT'S the goal of writing.

If you create these same qualities in your articles, if you inspire FEELING, you will not only keep your readers' attention but you will establish a rapport with them. And ultimately, the beginnings of personal trust.

The more you feeling that comes across in your messages and your articles, the more realistically and honestly you express your convictions, the more interest you create in your writing.

Stop and think about it.. why do you read a book from cover to cover, sometimes as quickly as you can? Because it strongly held your interest. Because it MADE you want to turn the page. How did it hold your interest? By expressing feelings that you wanted to understand and experience. Feelings create interest. Human beings thrive and survive on feelings.

So, how do you get started? Write a couple of short articles (300-500 words) and share them with your friends and family members. Ask for honest feedback. Make it a point to ask for HONEST opinions. Ask:

  • How did that make you feel?

  • Did it hold your interest?

  • Would it sound better if it were written differently?

In other words, test the waters and gain some confidence in your own abilities, and develop your own style of writing that fits your personality.

You may never become a best selling author, but with a little practice and patience, even you -- an average online marketer -- can propel your business to new heights by simply supplying your readers with good, honest information on topics with which you are familiar.
