Burn Rate = ZERO
What a stupid way to grow a business. Worse, many of these self proclaimed experts have tried to teach the rest of us how to market on-line. Talk about a lose-lose proposition. Thousands of students fresh out of college got high paying jobs in high tech start-ups based on outdated marketing concepts and principals they learned in college. Most thought they were living on easy street, many spending even more than they earned.The Party is Over Lately everywhere I go on the Internet I'm trying to visit websites that no longer exist. On the news recently I hear that in some places dot com failures are as high as 80%. In my own city of 230,000, we have over 70 software companies. Lately everywhere I go I see FOR RENT signs. It's no longer possible to pretend you know what you are doing while living off the deep pockets of ignorant Internet investors. Conventional marketing, the kind of marketing still taught in colleges is from a page in the past and doesn't work on the Internet. It's been difficult to impossible for the little guy to play the game without money to burn. You and I can't operate a business based on a "burn rate"; every investment in our business must pay off. When every dollar counts, less money is wasted. We must invest our meager funds carefully.The Gold Rush Is Finished In the past dot coms attracted market share and established their brands by giving away things the rest of us were trying to sell. Free hosting, free Internet connections, free software, free services and so on. In the future, we will see a lot less competition from the free providers. Giving away products and services simply costs too much. The stock market has hit bottom. Most of the pretenders have already hit bottom and are out of the market. In the Internet economy of the future, there is a return of sanity, and the importance of profit. Profit is what is left after paying for products, labor, taxes, advertising etc. Profit is why investors invest. In order to make stay in business you MUST earn a profit for your investors. You and I understand the need to earn profit. The attraction of profit is reason we develop our home businesses. We all want to earn an independent lifestyle.
