As a marketer, developing a membership product is one of the most profitable products you can sell. You earn residual income every month, selling the same product over and over again.
Membership products are attractive to affiliates because of their residual income possibilities; it's easy to get others to help selling memberships. Membership products pay well because they are so profitable to begin with.
Big corporations sell memberships now with many of the products we buy. Popular examples are getting a free cell phone to subscribe to a cell phone service. Digital television recorders will not work without subscribing to a program listing service with a monthly fee.
The only downside is that it's really hard to create a good membership product that will sell, and one that people will see the value continuing to pay membership fees.
Most On-Line Membership Products Fail
The key to developing a successful membership product is to develop a highly targeted product with exclusive benefits that non-members cannot find elsewhere.
Pricing a membership correctly is as critical to success as the product itself. One common mistake is to price the cost to join too low while the cost to continue membership is priced too high to justify the value received by remaining a member.
There are several marketing models that make sense.
Offer a higher up front membership fee in exchange for access to a more valuable product. Offer a free product in exchange for a membership contract. Offer quarterly or yearly membership options. Consider discounts for longer term membership commitment. Offer loyalty discounts for long term members. The list of possibilities is limitless.
You can offer a low or zero membership fee to join with a monthly fee for a service of some kind.
Satisfied customers make the best sales team. You can offer an exclusive member's only affiliate program to help members pay for their own membership.
However you set it up it's critical to have a failsafe plan to keep members satisfied. Always offer a full satisfaction guarantee.
I invest in membership products carefully, and only after careful investigation. I insist on good documentation and availability of support and some sort of guarantee. Personally I rarely purchase a membership unless it has the capacity to pay for itself. I only buy memberships with affiliate programs and I only sell memberships which I have joined myself.
The following are examples of what I consider excellent membership product examples. I will explain what I think the creators did that are responsible for their success. You don't have to be interested in buying a membership to study the following sales models.
