Search Engines - Old Tricks That Don't Work
By Christina Daly   ©2004 All Rights Reserved

There are so many excellent ways to get a good web page ranking. And then there are ways you want to avoid. Back in the day one could trick the search engines into improving the ranking of their web page by doing some or all of the following tricks. Nowadays search engines have smartened up quite a bit. If you attempt to fool them, your page can get penalized or even dropped. Repeat offenders have been known to have their domain banned completely from the search engines. Here are 5 tricks to avoid completely.

1.) Using the Meta redirect tag - This was a good one because you could design and submit a web page that would come up under a certain keyword. When the surfer clicked on a link to see the page, they would automatically be transferred to another page within seconds and without even knowing it. This was great if you wanted to designs 100 pages that ranked under 100 different keyword/phrases and then redirect them to your web site. Lots of free but unqualified traffic. If most search engines detect a redirect Meta tag, they won't even index the page.

2.) Repeating the keyword - since search engines impart base their ranking criteria on the content of the page, people would repeat the keyword they wanted to rank well under over and over and over. The search engines would figure it must have been heavy in content on that subject and give it a good relevancy score and a good ranking. They see this one a mile away now.

3.) Text the same color s the background - Another trick to increase keyword density. If the background of your web page is whit and you specify the text to be white as well it is invisible to the eye. The search engine algorithms are no programmed to disqualify this.

4.) Comments tag - Filling the comments tag with keywords and phrases. Since the comments tags in the HTML code do not show up as visible text, for a long time people got away with increasing their rankings by loading them up with keywords. Not anymore

5.) Tiny text - Adding keywords and phrases on the web page in itsy-bitsy sized text so that it was barely visible if at all and did not affect the aesthetics of the page. Try this one the highest ranking you are likely to get is 2nd from the bottom.

There are still many great ways to design your web pages to increase their ranking without violating search engine policy. Anyone can learn if they are willing to take time. Once you get it down, you can do it in your sleep. Invest your time into learning to do it the right way. Want to cut your time from months to days? Order The Search Engine Intelligence Report."
