There’s a common misconception circulating these days. Oh, it’s been around for a hundred years, but it surfaced again recently amid all-too-common hype for yet another internet marketing course. A simple three-word statement: Knowledge is Power!!
I disagree. I’m afraid knowledge is not power. Oh, knowledge is certainly necessary, even critical. Knowledge is valuable. But no, knowledge is not power.
Rather, ACTION is power. Here’s the best example I can give you: If you’re sitting on the railroad tracks and a freight train is bearing down on you, it is not enough to know you should get off the tracks. You have to take action. You have to get off the tracks! Without action, knowledge is nothing.
You can scan GOLF magazine, reading every hint, tip and stroke- saving technique, but that doesn’t make you a golfer. Nobody ever made the PGA Tour by reading about the golf swing.
If you want to make money on the internet, you can pour through every book, text, primer, magazine and treatise and yes, every marketing course, but it won’t do you a lick of good unless you put what you know into practice. You don’t need interesting topics for cocktail-party conversation, you need practical experience to show you what works and what doesn’t. You need to experiment. You need to take action!
I’m not advising you not to learn anything. We have to learn every day. In fact, I have long considered a college diploma nothing more than proof to an employer that you are capable of learning. It gets you an entry-level job. But what gets you your first promotion? What gets you a higher paying job with another company? What you studied in college? No. Practical experience. Using what you’ve learned and putting it into action.
There are men with PhDs driving taxi cabs. They have knowledge. There are millionaires without benefit of a high school diploma. Why? Because they took action. They may not have been accomplished in terms of academics, but they excelled at taking action, trying new things, experimenting, learning through experience.
You want to be successful? Devote less time studying and more time doing.
