Membership Websites

I usually don't recommend products involving monthly membership fees. Many of them are good for the first month then there is little value to the member continuing to pay the monthly fee.
Memberships that allow reselling rights to information products are the most profitable kind of membership, but many offer products that can be found elsewhere. One exception is a membership where you are allowed resale rights to products that you as a member get exclusive resale rights.
Common Problems
Often the quality of the information products is not good enough to justify the time and effort required to market the individual products and because it often requires several months to get the sales coming in, members often give up too soon.
Many membership websites sell products only in manuscript format where much more work is required. You have to compile the manuscripts into final e-books, design your own sales websites and graphics, and in many cases write your own sales letters and other marketing materials.
Last but not least, many membership websites have not existed long enough to offer a wide selection of information products for you to resell. Sure they promise to add more products every month but many simply don't expand over time with quality exclusive products.
The E-book Wholesaler
Tom Hua is the founder of the E-book Wholesaler. E-book Wholesaler started in May of 2001. Tom originated the concept of selling resale rights when he purchased master resale rights to about a hundred products in 1999 titled "Free to Sell" which is probably the most popular resale package of all time. I have been a member of one membership website for almost 6 years, and it's been profitable almost from the beginning. They offer a wide range of information products covering many various niches.

The Marketing Process
First I personalize the links within the product and download it to my computer. Next I download the website. I personalize the website and I take the extra step of writing my own Meta tags to make it easier to get found in the search engines.
There is a download page for each product. I upload the website and the product and submit the sales page and the "about the author" page to the search engines.
This process requires about an hour for each product I choose to resell. The good news is that this is work that I only do once. After I set up each e-book I just sit back and wait for the sales to come in. In addition I have a list that I email the brief description of each month's products. After I setup each product I am done. I never have to do anything else to make sales. Each product may not sell a lot but over time it really adds up and after one or two sales a month I am getting 100% profit from all product sales.
Tom's excellent crew offers more and better support resources to help you market the products. You get access to a knowledge base covering marketing details and answering almost any question members might have. In addition, email support is available.
The Affiliate program
Members are allowed to join the affiliate program where they are allowed to earn fees from the sale of new memberships. Because of this affiliate program I have never had to pay any out-of-pocket fees to remain a member.
Who Should Consider a Membership?
Reselling information products, especially when you keep 100% of what you take in is the most profitable niche you can get into on the Internet.
Some HTML editing experience is really helpful, you can learn as you go, but having webmaster skills certainly helps, especially getting it off the ground. Setting up the first few products for sale will require more time, but over time it gets much easier and faster to market the products.

Summing Up
Membership websites are not always the best deal, however there are exceptions. Some membership websites offer good long term value.
I wouldn't have remained a member of the E-book Wholesaler for almost six years if I didn't make money from it. On the other hand, it took me a couple of months to sell enough of the products to break even, after that It has been profitable every month since May of 2001.
If you are investigating any membership site I would recommend you compare it to the E-book Wholesaler. Make sure you have the minimum requirements required to market the information products before you buy, if not be prepared to learn the necessary skills over time.
