When I started out in 1996 I really thought marketing should be simple so I did everything I thought might work without any specific skills or tools.
Being a know-it-all type, most of what I know I learned the hard way, from my own mistakes. Somehow along the way I've learned what it takes to be successful.
Information and the access to good tools save time and leverage your expertise; they are the keys to success in Internet marketing.
Basically you get out of something proportionally to what you invest into it. Conventional business owners plan and expect success to take time. Often the Internet Marketer expects overnight success.
Skill Development
The best way to develop the skills you'll need is using a combination of learning from others who are willing to share their secrets and from practical experience.
When I started there were almost no books on on-line marketing but today there are thousands of good e-books available cheap. Knowing what I know now, developing a personal marketing strategy is even more important than choosing a product or service. I would invest in marketing strategy & technique e-books first. After reading several you will be more able to develop a workable marketing strategy for you.
To date I still haven't found a better more well rounded marketing course than Corey Rudl's "Insider Secrets to Marketing Your Business on the Internet", it's over 1000 pages in two 8 x 11" three ring binders and 2 resource CD's. This course isn't cheap, it's $147.00, but it's actually a very small investment because it covers all strategies available to market anything on-line allowing you to match your skill level to strategies at any level of experience.

Getting Experience
Most of us start out selling other people's products and services. Eventually you will want to develop your own product in order to have total control of your business.
Although it's more difficult to earn money selling products you don't control, affiliate programs provide sales tools and websites to help us test marketing strategies without a major investment.
Many people have created multiple income streams selling affiliate products and have developed a living income, especially with products offering reoccurring or residual income.
After you develop your own product or service to sell, you should consider setting up your own affiliate program. Affiliate programs harness the power of "other people's efforts" to achieve more sales with less marketing cost than any other way of selling on the Internet.

Offer a Package Deal
Rather than forcing people to identify their exact needs value added packages of related products provide a combination of options at a set price.
No matter what product or service you are selling it will sell better and earn you more profit if you offer it in a package of some kind. If you already have a unique product or service you can easily more than double your total profit simply by including a few low cost value added bonuses along with your product.

Ultimately the best product or service you can sell on-line is one you create yourself and have complete control over. You can also purchase distribution or resale rights to existing products in order to gain more marketing control.

Growing Sales
Almost 100% of the costs associated with marketing go into acquiring that first contact. However, only a very small percentage of people buy on their first visit.
Your first and most important challenge is to earn a return visit, a bookmark, an email address, or the relationship may end at that first visit.
Good relationships develop trust over time and establish your expertise. One of the best ways to establish a good relationship with your prospects is to offer free information related to your expertise. It's also important to ask for feedback.
You may sell your prospect on the value of your product or service but if they can't find you again when they decide to buy they may buy an inferior product from someone else.
Follow Up
Probably the most effective sales technique is to offer a series of content rich follow-up email messages that go out automatically over a few days or weeks. Your follow up system's purpose is to offer compelling content in bite-sized chunks. Your follow-up system works your prospects for you. Offering them enough information to hold their attention, and long enough to EARN the opportunity to pass the hat.
I don't recommend using free autoresponder services, most likely your messages will be blocked before your subscriber sees your messages. I replaced an expensive $300 script with a simple autoresponder script that I include free on my CDs. You can get it here:

Getting Repeat Business
Since almost all of your costs are associated with that first sale your most profitable sale will always be to your existing satisfied customers. The real work is earning their trust, and after you have earned it you are considered a preferred provider for related products, even if they are not your own.
If you offer products and services to your existing customers, make double sure you have purchased them yourself first and you are completely satisfied. Never sell a product to anyone you don't already own and recommend; that's common sense but people continue to sell products they don't own all the time.
Don't get greedy or take advantage of a trusting relationship with your existing customers, it only takes one bad recommendation or disappointment to lose a trusting customer.
Consider selling products that must be purchased again and again. Direct and network marketers have long understood the value of selling products that get used up and are purchased again and again. Amway built an empire selling soap; everyone uses it and buys it over and over.
Services and memberships may be renewable, and make excellent follow up products for your existing customers. Your customers will welcome your special offers for related products and services even if you don't own or control the products yourself.
Better customer service and stronger relationships make satisfied customers, which earn referrals, which can be a huge source of new business.
Ongoing Source of Fresh Leads
In order to grow, you'll need a program in place to acquire constant stream of new prospects. Your products will not sell to everyone, so it's important to have an effective and affordable client acquisition program.
Prime the pump; roll over a significant portion of your profits into new markets and into new products for newly identified markets which you may have overlooked when you started.
Consider creating a referral reward plan to show your appreciation to those who give you referrals and encourage them to send you even more customers in the future.
Summing Up
These are the timeless and most important considerations in developing your Internet Business. In order to be successful we must learn to treat our business like a business - not a hobby.
You may experience some failures along the way, failure is part of the learning process, but even if you fail at some of the steps, you will be ahead of where you are right now.
Successful people fail, often over and over, but they become successful in the long run because the never give up. Successful people are successful not because they do everything right, but because they don't give up. The only ways you can REALLY fail is to not get started - or to give up.
